We notice some things only when they change

Have you ever walked into a familiar room and suddenly noticed how much lighter it felt?

The room was the same.

The windows hadn't changed.

But daylight was pouring in.

And through the windows, a view of blue sky that had gradually disappeared over the years was open again.

A large tree outside our kitchen windows had grown considerably over time.

Little by little, it had taken more of the daylight.

We never really noticed the kitchen getting darker.

The tree simply became part of the view.

Then one day it had to come down.

Its roots had begun affecting the neighboring house's plumbing.

The tree was too large to remove at once.

So it came down branch by branch.

And something happened as we watched.

One branch came down.

More daylight entered the kitchen.

Another came down.

More sky appeared.

Then another.

Until a view that had gradually disappeared over many years was open again.

Blue sky.

Daylight.

And a kitchen that suddenly felt quite different to be in.

Nothing about the kitchen itself had changed. One condition around it had.

What was interesting was how little we had noticed that condition changing in the other direction.

The tree had not suddenly blocked the light.

It had happened gradually.

We had simply become accustomed to the environment as it changed around us.

Only when the condition changed again did its influence become obvious.

Sometimes something can become part of our experience so gradually that we barely notice it.
